The Monterey County Health Department’s Communicable Disease Unit is responsible for preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases like Salmonellosis, E. coli infection, influenza, whooping cough, West Nile virus, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.  If you have questions about a communicable disease, please contact us at the number above.

Notice of Beilenson Hearing

Monterey County will be holding a Beilenson Hearing on June 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors Chambers at 168 W. Alisal in Salinas. A Beilenson Hearing is a public hearing that is required by § 1442.5 of the California Health and Safety Code (Beilenson’s Act) for public input into proposed public health service reductions. Prior to closing, eliminating or reducing the level of medical services provided by the leasing, selling, or transfer of management of, a county facility, the board shall provide public notice, of public hearings to be held by the board prior to its decision to proceed. Public Health services proposed to be eliminated include directly observed therapy for infectious TB patients, screenings of immigrants flagged by US Customs as being at high risk for active TB, contact investigations for individuals diagnosed with pertussis and other infectious diseases, partner treatment for individuals diagnosed with STDs, rabies risk assessment assistance for animal bite victims, nurse case management of homeless individuals who have frequent emergency department visits, and home visits for at risk pregnant women, among other core public health services. Public health laboratory services will also be reduced.

The Beilenson Hearing is being held as a result of the proposed reductions to the proposed 2018-2019 fiscal year budget. Budget hearings for the FY 2018-19 Recommended Budget are scheduled to begin on Monday, June 4, 2018. The budget hearing schedule will be available online at the Monterey County Clerk of the Board’s website on or around Friday, May 25, 2018. A public comment period will be available to individuals who wish to express their thoughts about the proposed budget cuts and subsequent service reductions. Alternatively, individuals can write to the Board of Supervisors prior to the hearings. Emails can be sent to the Board of Supervisors care of the Clerk of the Board at COB@co.monterey.ca.us.
